UTTAR PRADESH PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION (UPPSC)
Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) is a Constitutional body created for the Recruitment of various Group A and Group B officers in the administrative services of Uttar Pradesh State. Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) PCS is the toughest exam conducted by UPPSC in the state of Uttar Pradesh for the senior administrative posts in the state. Clearing this examination gives the aspirants to have a career in bureaucracy and to take part in administrative machinery at the state level.
UPPSC PCS Selection Procedure
The government of Uttar Pradesh conducts the UPPSC exam every year in order to select and recruit various government officials for esteemed government departments and sectors. The candidates go through a rigorous selection procedure in order to get selected for the commission services. Applied candidates have to take three crucial stages of the UPPSC examination. Only those who are able to clear all the stages with minimum cut-off marks are able to make it to the final list of selected candidates. The three-stage of the selection procedure includes:
- A. The Prelims Examination
- B. The Mains Examination
- C. The Interview round (Personality Test)

The Prelims Examination
The first stage of the UPPSC examination is the Prelims. This examination is conducted all over Uttar Pradesh in offline mode only. Every year around 8 to 9 lakh candidates sit for this examination. In the prelims question paper, all the questions asked are of objective type i.e., one option correct. For correct responses, the marks are awarded and for incorrect responses, 1/4th of the marks are deducted from the final score. Unattempted responses are not evaluated. Those who clear the prelims examination are then eligible to sit for the second stage of the UPPSC examination i.e., The Main (written) Examination.
Duration: Two hours (Marks – 200)
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General Issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity, and Climate Change- that do not require subject specialization.
- General Science
- Current events of national and international Importance: – On Current Events of National and International Importance, candidates will be expected to have knowledge about them.
- History of India & Indian National Movement: – In History emphasis should be on a broad understanding of social, economic, and political aspects of Indian History. In the Indian National Movement, the candidates are expected to have a synoptic view of the nature and character of the freedom movement, growth of nationalism, and attainment of Independence.
- Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World: In World Geography only a general understanding of the subject will be expected. Questions on the Geography of India will relate to the Physical, Social & Economic Geography of India.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.:- In Indian Polity, Economic and Culture, questions will test knowledge of the country’s political system including Panchayati Raj and Community Development, broad features of Economic policy in India and Indian Culture.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.:- The candidates will be tested with respect to problems and the relationship between Population, Environment, and Urbanisation.
- General Issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity, and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization, General awareness of the subject is expected from candidates.
- General Science: – Questions on General Science will cover general appreciation and understanding of Science including matters of everyday observation and experience, as may be expected of a well-educated person, who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.
Note: – Candidates are expected to have general awareness about the above subjects with special reference to Uttar Pradesh

- Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level- Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics.

Elementary Mathematics (Upto Class X Level)
1. Arithmetic:- (i) Number systems: Natural Numbers, Integers, Rational and Irrational numbers, Real numbers, Divisors of an integer, prime Integers, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of integers and their Interrelationship.
(ii) Average (iii) Ratio and proportion (iv) Percentage (v) Profit and Loss (vi) Simple and Compound Interests (vii) Work and Time (viii) Speed, Time, and Distance
2. Algebra: – (i) Factors of polynomials, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of polynomials and their Interrelationship, Remainder theorem, simultaneous linear equations, quadratic equations. (ii) Set Theory: – Set null set, subsets and proper subsets of a set, operations (Union, Intersections, difference, symmetric difference) between sets, Venn diagram.
3. Geometry: – (i) Constructions and theorems regarding triangle, rectangle, square, trapezium, and circles, their perimeter, and area. (ii) Volume and surface area of a sphere, right circular cylinder, right circular cone, and Cube.
4. Statistics: – Collection of data, Classification of data, frequency, frequency distribution, tabulation, cumulative frequency. Representation of data – Bar diagram, Pie chart, histogram, frequency polygon, cumulative frequency curves (ogives), Measures of Central tendency: Arithmetic Mean, Median, and Mode.

Note:
(1) Paper-II of the Preliminary Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
(2) It is mandatory for the Candidates to appear in both the papers of the Preliminary Examination for the purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in case he does not appear in both papers.
(3) The merit of the Candidates will be determined on the basis of marks obtained in Paper-I of the Preliminary Examination.
The Mains Examination
Mains examination consists of a total of 8 question papers held at regular intervals of dates. Two papers are of qualifying nature papers on Indian languages and English. Four papers consisting of general studies I, II, III, and IV are categorized according to different topics. The last two papers are held for optional subjects. The main examination total accounts for 1500 marks.

The Interview round (Personality Test)
Candidates who qualify for the main examination then go through the personality test in the final stage of the interview round. The UPPSC evaluates the candidates for an interview round out of 100 marks. It’s a very important round that plays a crucial part in calculating a candidate’s score and deciding rank. Questions are asked from all the current affairs, syllabus topics, and candidates’ detailed application forms. This final stage of the round takes place in the UPPSC office at Prayagraj where the candidates are supposed to report at their allotted timing slots.
After all the three stages of the UPPSC examination, the final results are released and the rank list gets public.
