Features of this programme
After clearing the preliminary stage, the next step for a candidate is the main examination. The main examination consists of a total of 9 papers, 4 GS papers, 2 papers of optional subjects, 1 paper of essay, and 2 qualifying papers of mother language and English paper.
Optional subjects consist of 500 marks out of a total of 2025 marks and hence play a very important role in getting shortlisted in the civil services examination. Optional subjects are comparatively more scoring than the remaining 4 GS papers:
- A detailed and well-defined syllabus is provided by UPSC in their notification every year which makes optional subjects hassle-free.
- Regarding the syllabus, UPSC has also mentioned that the scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers for the examination is broad the honours degree level is a level higher than the bachelor’s degree and lower than the master’s degree. However, in the case of Engineering, Medical Science and Law the level corresponds to the bachelor’s degree.
